| Annual Dinner Meeting: The
Annual Dinner Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 13th. We will meet
at 6:00pm. This year the meeting will be held at Alumni Hall at
Stonehill College. We have a wonderful speaker in store, Penny Decker, who will
do her flower design program "Purely for Pleasure." All of her designs,
including the containers, will be raffled. Members will receive one free raffle ticket
each, and may purchase more tickets at the cost of 3 tickets for $5. Many other treats
will be raffled as well, including some hanging plants left over from the EGC plant sale.
Members who would still like to sign up for the dinner meeting can do so by calling Nancy
Cohenno by Thursday, June 8th. The charge for dinner is $23, and the meal
choices are broiled haddock or top round of beef. Window Boxes: The window boxes along Main Street have all been planted and look fabulous. Be sure to take a walk and appreciate how they compliment the individual businesses. They are all different and very creatively done. The judging will be sometime later in the summer when all the flowers have filled in. Garden Walks: This program occurs on the first of each summer month (June, July, & August). This program is meant to be a short and fun way to stay in touch over the summer, and to exchange ideas for plantings with others. It is requested that only club members attend (of course small children are allowed). We all love to see an exquisite, perfectly manicured garden. However, this is not the reality for most of us. Each member who is offering his/her garden for us to view has been told not to worry about weeding, perfection, etc. On Sunday, July 1st and Wednesday, August 1st we will begin at the first house on the list at 8:30am. Then we will proceed to the second house at about 9:00am, and to the third at about 9:30am. You are free to show up at the start or catch up in the middle. July Garden Walk: Sunday, July 1st - Dee Dee Ames 8:30am, Lynn Payne 9am, Blanca Michajlov 9:30am. August Garden Walk: Wednesday, August 1st - Linda Beal 8:30am, Robin Kallfelz 9:00am, Jim Carlino 9:30am. Award Winners: The Easton Garden Club received the "2000 Club of Distinction Award" at the Annual Meeting of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts in May. The meeting also featured a State Federation Standard Flower Show, "Visions - Doorway to the Future." Two of our members participated and did extremely well. Gloria Freitas won a blue ribbon - first place, Designer's choice, and the Dorothy Hill Award for her design in the "stretch" category. Davie McNamara took second place for her synergistic design in the theme "Dream, Dream, Dream." Congratulations Gloria and Davie! Scholarships: As part of the Easton Garden Club's mission statement located in the Bylaws Article II, "The object of this club shall be to advance and encourage the art of gardening and study of horticulture, floriculture and landscape architecture." To this end, the club gives scholarships annually to residents of Easton interested in environmental studies. This year we gave $500 scholarships to Oliver Ames students Nicholas Benjamin and Erin Dewey. We also gave a $500 toolship to a Southeastern Regional Vocational School student. Dues: Membership dues for 2001/2002 are due. If you have not done so, please remit a check made payable to the Easton Garden Club to Membership Chairperson Mary Beth Meyer in order to be included in the 2001/2002 EGC book. The annual dues are: $15 for Active Members, $35 for Associate Members (only after five active years), and no payment is due for Senior Members (65 years or older who have been active members for at least ten years). If you do not plan to continue in the club, please let Mary Beth know in writing. Board Position Open: We are looking for a member who is interested in filling a vacancy on the Board. The open position is that of Awards Chairperson. Anyone that may be interested please contact Nominations Chairperson Kay Fulcher for details. |
