Street Window Boxes: The Main Street window boxes need to be cleaned out of all
the winter greens that have turned brown in our warm weather. Please give us a hand - the
more people helping, the quicker we'll get it done. We will meet this Saturday
morning, March 9th at 9:00 am. Please bring trash bags. South Shore District Meeting: EGC members attending the South Shore District's annual meeting who wish to carpool, will meet at the Village Shoppes Plaza at Washington St. and Main St. on Wednesday, March 27th at 8:00 am. The meeting is a luncheon and lecture ("Come Back in Thyme") at the Barker Tavern in Scituate, MA. Members who would like to attend, but have not already signed up, should mail a check payable to "GCFMA" to Cheryl Collins, 1112 School Street, Mansfield, MA 02048 by Friday, March 15, 2002. Please mark on your check your preference for lunch of "chicken breast with sweet peppers atop linguini" or "poached salmon en papillote." New Member Tea: The New Member Tea this year will be held on Sunday, April 28th at 2:00 p.m. at the Home of Kay Fulcher. This is a chance for the board members to welcome new members and fill them in on all of our activities. All new members from the past year will receive an invitation. Please contact Membership Chairman, Mary Beth Meyer if you do not receive an invitation in the mail, and please remember to RSVP. Summer Garden Walks: "Summer Garden Walks" is a casual program held on the 1st day of each month (June, July and August). Members volunteer to allow us to walk through their yards, sharing their garden tips. We meet at the first house at 8:30am, the second at 9:00am, and then a third at 9:30am. If you have a garden small or large, new or mature, or perhaps would just like some advice on your garden, please give Garden Walks Chairperson Joyce Holster a call to sign up. The summer schedule will be published in the May and June newsletters. Discount Reminder: The Plant Depot of Easton generously gives Garden Club members a 15% discount on purchases of plant materials. Just remember to bring along your current EGC book as proof of membership. Crafters Wanted: With the Spring Plant Sale coming up, we are considering adding a few "crafts" to the sale. Any members with sewing talent who could help out, please contact Darya Cotter. |

*Forcing Branches: With a technique called
"forcing," you can actually trick flowering branches into believing it's spring,
even though the calendar says it's not time yet. Lilacs and plum are beautiful to force,
but can be tricky. The best time to take your cuttings is between February and March
during the warmest part of the day, when temperatures are above 32 degrees. Once you get
the cuttings indoors, remove 1" from the base. This will help the branch absorb more
water. But, just to ensure the uptake of water, get out a hammer and smash the end of the
branch. Once you've prepared the stems, put them in lukewarm water, add a splash of
hydrogen peroxide, and change the water every 2 days. This will help keep bacteria away.
For the first few days the branches need moisture, so cover them with a plastic bag and
keep them covered for 3 days. Keep in a cool location and when the buds swell, move them
into indirect light... and you'll have beautiful blooms in no time. |
